Kyoto Kimono Visits Girl Scout Troop 425

We had a great time talking about Japan and kimonos!  I visited with Girl Scout Troop #425 in Apalachin, NY on Monday January 10th. The girls were working on their “Art to Wear”  badges and wanted to know about kimonos as well as what it was like to own a business.  We talked about Japanese culture and why I was so drawn to it, and we brainstormed about what kind of dream job they might want to do one day.

And of course I brought kimonos for them to try on.

We talked about the symbolism of some of the patterns as well as the hard work and artistic talent it takes to make a kimono.

The girls really seemed to appreciate the kimono fabric and garments as “wearable art”.

At the end of the presentation I gave them some kimono fabric to make little belts out of – and next week we’ll have photos of their creations, so stay tuned!
