Kasuri Exhibition at the Fowler Museum at UCLA

On exhibit until June 24th (sorry, we didn’t hear about it until today!) is the extensive textile collection of Jeff Krause, who came to Kyoto with us in 2007 and collected part of this exhibit at the temple markets!  Jeff donated his collection to the Fowler in 2008, and it is well worth the trip for anyone who is in the area.

Egasuri means “picture kasuri”, where the kasuri technique is used to make an image rather than a more simple geometric pattern. Kasuri is the ikat technique, where a resist paste is applied to the threads themselves before they are woven, and then the pattern, with its “fuzzy edges”  emerges on the loom.  Incredible.
